sapele plywood often used as a substitute for genuine mahogany or sometimes referred to as "Sapele Mahogany". sapele wood has many characteristics that resemble Mahogany, the fresh heartwood is pink, gradually changing to mahogany-like reddish brown or purple-brown with atmospheric oxidation, the sapwood is light red to light grayish yellow. Three most common textures of sapele are plain, figured and pommele figure.

Sapele takes nails, screws, and glues well, easy to work with by hand and machine, including high-end wooden objects such as musical instruments and decorative furniture. In terms of durability, sapele is known for moderately durable, against decay resistance and with moderate rating for insect resistance. Sapele wood is used for cabinetry, flooring and other wooden specialty items.
